The Story Behind the Coffee
This lot comes from Butare Farm, a 2-hectare coffee farm in Nyamasheke, West Rwanda, owned by Bagaragaza Deo. Since inheriting the land from his elders in 2006, Bagaragaza has carried forward a family tradition of coffee farming, inspired by the role models around him who cultivated the region’s most important crop.
Situated at 1540 masl, Butare Farm is small in scale but big in reputation. Bagaragaza has earned recognition both locally and internationally: he was ranked 1st in his district for agricultural practices, his farm won the Cup of Excellence in 2015, and in 2019, he traveled to Colombia for advanced training in agricultural practices and crop intensification. His commitment to quality shines through every step of his work.
What Makes This Coffee Unique
This lot is an anaerobic natural, a processing method that intensifies fruit-forward complexity while maintaining balance and structure in the cup. In this process, cherries are sealed in oxygen-free tanks during fermentation, creating conditions that highlight vibrant, wine-like flavors and tropical sweetness.
The result is a cup bursting with character: pineapple, lychee, and sangria—a lively, fruit-driven profile that captures the best of both the unique terroir of Nyamasheke and Bagaragaza’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Why We Love It
Rwanda Butare is a coffee that feels both celebratory and refreshing. Its juicy tropical notes are reminiscent of a summer punchbowl, while its depth of flavor makes it a coffee to savor slowly. For us, it represents everything we look for in an adventurous cup: tradition, innovation, and undeniable character.
