The Story Behind the Coffee
Our newest single origin, Papua New Guinea Nebilyer Valley, comes from the rugged, fertile highlands of Papua New Guinea, one of the most remote and fascinating coffee-growing regions in the world. Grown in the Tambul-Nebilyer District of the Western Highlands, this coffee is produced by a network of smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on family plots scattered throughout the valley.
The coffee is collected and processed at the Kuta Mill, an important hub that brings together producers from across the region. For generations, the Leahy family—longtime residents of the Western Highlands—has helped develop the infrastructure that allows farmers in this remote valley to grow, process, and export specialty coffee. Their work has supported thousands of small producers and helped establish coffee as a vital source of income in the region.
Coffee has been grown in Papua New Guinea’s highlands for nearly a century. The region’s volcanic soils, cool mountain climate, and isolated geography create ideal conditions for cultivating exceptional arabica varieties like Bourbon and Typica, both known for their balance, structure, and sweetness.
At around 1350 meters above sea level, coffee here grows slowly, allowing sugars and complexity to develop in the cherry. The result is a cup that reflects the richness of the land and the dedication of the farmers who produce it.
What Makes This Coffee Unique
Papua New Guinea Nebilyer Valley is a fully washed coffee, centrally processed and carefully sun-dried after harvest. This approach highlights clarity and structure in the cup, allowing the natural character of the region’s Bourbon and Typica varieties to shine.
One of the defining characteristics of coffees from Papua New Guinea is their remarkable balance. They often combine the sweetness and body typically associated with Indonesian coffees with the brightness and complexity more common in Central American profiles. Nebilyer Valley coffees in particular are known for their deep caramelized sweetness and layered texture. In the cup, this coffee is rich, comforting, and beautifully balanced. Dark chocolate forms the foundation, creating a deep cocoa sweetness that anchors the profile. Notes of red apple bring a gentle brightness and crisp acidity, while a lingering molasses-like sweetness adds depth and warmth to the finish. The result is a coffee that feels both classic and distinctive—structured, sweet, and incredibly satisfying.
Why We Love It
