The Story Behind the Coffee
Uganda NKG Bloom Silverback comes to us from Bulambuli, a lush district in Eastern Uganda that sits at the foot of Mt. Elgon, right along the Kenya border. This region is bursting with potential, and in 2022 the Bulambuli Washing Station was built, becoming a hub for smallholder farmers to bring their coffee for careful pulping, fermenting, drying, and sorting.
This lot is the first Arabica offering from the NKG Bloom Uganda initiative, a program that provides farmers with access to mobile money advances, soil analysis, and professional training in both agriculture and business. It’s an investment not just in great coffee, but in long-term sustainability for the community.
What Makes This Coffee Unique
Silverback is produced by several cooperatives in Bulambuli whose members grow SL14, SL28, KP162, and KP423 varieties at altitudes between 1,500 and 3,050 meters. These cherries are delivered to the washing station throughout the harvest season, where they undergo rigorous quality checks before being washed, fermented, and dried slowly on raised beds for up to four weeks. The result is a coffee that captures the best of both sweetness and structure: deep and comforting, but with an unmistakable fruit-forward vibrancy.
The name “Silverback” honors Uganda’s most iconic inhabitants... mighty yet gentle gorillas. Just like these creatures, this coffee is powerful yet nuanced, with a layered complexity that unfolds with every sip.
