The Story Behind the Coffee
Nestled in Kenya’s Rift Valley, Endebess Estate is situated near Kitale in Trans Nzoia County at the foot of Mount Elgon—an extinct shield volcano straddling the Kenya-Uganda border. The estate spans 758 hectares, with 248 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation. This rich, volcanic land provides the ideal environment for growing high-quality coffee with distinct, fruit-forward characteristics.
Though Kenya is traditionally known for its washed-process coffees, Endebess Estate has perfected the natural process, allowing the coffee cherries to dry intact in the sun, developing a deeper, more complex fruitiness. The estate uses fresh river water from the Koitobos River for initial washing, then carefully sun-dries the coffee on raised beds for 21 to 28 days, ensuring even drying and flavor development. Each bean is rotated at least four times daily to maintain optimal conditions.
A Legacy of Craft and Sustainability
Endebess Estate has a long history dating back to the 1940s, originally milling and processing coffee for itself and neighboring farmers. After changing ownership a few times, it is now managed by Kaitet Tea Plantations, a company dedicated to both quality coffee and social responsibility. The estate prioritizes the welfare of its employees, having funded over 15 housing renovations and sponsored local students in their education. As the farm continues to grow, it aims to expand its sustainability efforts while achieving higher certifications for its infrastructure and operations.
